Strawberry Deuce

01 January 2017

Wimbledon, the oldest and most famous tennis tournament in the world, is underway in England and there's one particular aspect of the competition we love.

The strawberries!

Wimbledon is the largest single annual sporting catering operation carried out in Europe and one of its long held traditions is serving top quality strawberries, as part of their famous Strawberries & Cream.

With up to 39,000 spectators in the grounds at any one time, and around 3,000 catering staff working there, the average quantities of food and drink served at The Championships are impressive.

  • 21,917 bottles of Champagne
  • 76,603 Ice creams
  • 303,277 glasses of Pimm’s
  • 72,142 Sandwiches/baguettes
  • 110,225 Scones
  • 307,277 cups of tea and coffee
  • 117,507 pints of draught beer and lager
  • 34,572 litres of milk
  • 2,198 afternoon tea hampers
  • 9,848 litres of dairy cream
  • 50,000 plants supplied

And the fresh produce statistics are just as incredible, as every year a massive 2,195kg of bananas (for players) and 166,055 portions Strawberries & Cream are consumed.

The price for a portion of Strawberries & Cream (with a minimum of 10 strawberries) at Wimbledon has remained at £2.50 per serving for seven years, since 2010. The strawberries are of the highest quality, Grade 1 English from Kent. They have been supplied by the same farm for the last 25 years. Each year they supply over 28 tonnes or 1.4 million strawberries, to the tournament.

"Grown locally means they can deliver the freshest tasting berries timed to ripe perfection, with the most enticing aroma, during the two weeks of Wimbledon."

To ensure the utmost freshness, strawberries are picked at 4am, collected from the packing plant at 9am and delivered to the Club by 11am for inspection and hulling. They are then enjoyed by guests on the same day.

At Innovative Fresh we believe all consumers deserve to enjoy perfect strawberries, wherever they buy them, and we love that this sought-after fruit is enjoyed all through the summer, by all age groups.

At Innovative Fresh we believe all consumers deserve to enjoy perfect strawberries, wherever they buy them, and we love that this sought-after fruit is enjoyed all through the summer, by all age groups.

However, strawberry growers may experience challenges in the prolonged warmer weather. Strawberries need enough difference in temperature between day and night, so they can effectively 'shut down' at night, allowing the plant to recover, if they can't do this it can affect the development of the sugars.

Repeat business from consumers rests on their first few tastes. Strawberries that lack taste, are too soft, or have a white hard core can put a consumer off coming back to purchase. Whereas a slightly firm, sweet-smelling, juicy and tasty strawberry will ensure they return for their fruit and tell their friends.

As consumption of this popular fruit continues to grow across Europe year by year it's important retailers provide strawberries consumers want to return for.

At Innovative Fresh we monitor strawberries every week, testing for brix and quality. Let us help you to finetune your strawberry programme to give the consumer the best strawberries possible and have them returning again and again this summer.
